Chaz Bojorquez Godfather of Graffiti Street Artist Los Angeles
Chaz Bojorquez Godfather of Graffiti Street Artist Los Angeles

From the diamond studded highway of the Arroyo Seco riverbed in the barrio of Highland Park, to the Smithsonian, Chaz Bojórquez has become a living legend as The GodFather of West Coast Graffiti.

A 50 year+ career mark, Chaz has changed the perception of Cholo graffiti writing into a well respected and influential art form. Bojórquez began his west-coast aesthetic in 1969, using Cholo style graffiti mixed with the disciplined Asian art form of calligraphy. Chaz brought an identity and unique aesthetic to a worldwide community, both as a street artist and a fine artist. Graffiti is a dialogue, and Chaz’s signature style is the language of East L.A. neighborhoods.

Graffiti has become central to the experience of every city. Somos L.A. brings the grit of the street into a tangible, wearable piece of calligrafitti history. If Graffiti had a soul, Somos L.A is it’s vessel.

ArtCenter DEI Lecture: Chaz Bojórquez, Godfather of Graffiti

Recorded in late 2019, in celebration of his 50 year career in the arts, join us for this candid lecture with prolific Los Angeles born artist, Chaz Bojórquez, the "Godfather of Graffiti." Chaz has created a one-of-a-kind body of work over his lifetime, blending his style of "Cholo gang graffiti" with his study of Chinese calligraphy and typography. His work is featured in skate videos, movies, magazines, museums and galleries, in the US and internationally. From the artist: "The graffiti art that Chaz Bojórquez paints today, asks even deeper questions of himself, does graffiti have intent, purpose, cultural identity, history and create unity? Who owns the public space and who has the right to speak and be heard? These universal questions have answers in all of us." This lecture was recorded live at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California on Wednesday, October 2, 2019. Introduction by Dr. Aaron Bruce, Chief Diversity Officer, ArtCenter College of Design Shot by - Antoine Mellinger Co-sponsored by ArtCenter's Graphic Design and Grad Graphic Design Department and the Latinx Heritage Month Events Committee. ------------------ Learn more about Chaz Bojórquez https://www.somosla.net/ https://www.instagram.com/chaz_bojorquez/ https://twitter.com/chazbojrquez To learn more about ArtCenter DEI http://www.artcenter.edu/DEI http://www.artcenterdei.com Connect with ArtCenter DEI http://instagram.com/artcenterdei http://twitter.com/artcenterdei http://facebook.com/artcenterdei
